Internal moves between OKX Funding and Trading accounts: keeping them out of your tax numbers

Shifting coins between your OKX Funding and Trading accounts is not a trade, but exports can make it look like one. How Australians can label these lines, reconcile balances and hand a clean file to an accountant.

Every OKX account has at least two places where coins live: the Funding account, where deposits usually land and from where withdrawals and P2P happen, and the Trading account, which holds what you use for spot, margin and derivatives. Moving USDT from one to the other takes a tap and costs nothing. The trouble starts at tax time, when a crypto tax tool or a home-made spreadsheet sees those moves as money arriving and leaving. Double-counted deposits, phantom withdrawals and balances that never match the app are the usual result. A little labelling during the year avoids it.

Where these transfers show up

In the app, open Assets, then the history or bills section, and filter by transfer. Each internal move appears with a direction, such as from Funding to Trading, the coin, the amount and a timestamp. When you export statements for a tax period, the same moves appear as separate rows, sometimes one row for each side. Download the export from the browser version if the app's options feel limited; the file is easier to sort on a computer. Keep the original file untouched and work on a copy.

Labelling them so software ignores them

Add a column to your copy called category and mark every Funding to Trading or Trading to Funding row as internal. Most crypto tax tools let you tag a line as an internal or self transfer, or they detect matching pairs automatically if both sides are present with identical amounts and close timestamps. Check a handful by hand: an internal move should leave your total holdings of that coin unchanged. If a tool still reports a gain or a new acquisition on one of these rows, correct the tag rather than deleting the row.

Reconciling against the balance in the app

Once a quarter, pick one coin you hold, such as USDT, and add up deposits, withdrawals, trades, fees and funding payments from your export. Internal transfers should net to zero across the two accounts. Compare the result with the combined balance OKX shows for Funding plus Trading on the last day of the quarter. A small gap often comes from rounding or from interest in a savings product; a large one usually means a row was mislabelled or an export period was missed.

What to hand your accountant

Give your tax agent the untouched export, your labelled copy and a short note explaining that rows marked internal are transfers between your own OKX accounts. Mention any subaccounts too, since transfers to them look similar. If you also moved coins to a wallet or another exchange you own, list those addresses so they can be matched. The ATO expects you to keep records that explain each transaction, and a clean, labelled file makes that far less painful in July.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Filter the OKX bills history by transfer and confirm the direction of each internal move.
  • Tag every Funding to Trading and Trading to Funding row as internal in a copy of the export.
  • Reconcile one coin each quarter so internal moves net to zero against the combined balance.
  • Give your accountant the original export, the labelled copy and a list of your own addresses.
